Latest Backup Exec Offers Virtual Machine Support

This past week, Symantec Corportation announced the latest release of its Backup Exec product family would soon provide integrated data and full system recovery of virtual machines. Symantec’s Backup Exec 12.5 and Backup Exec System Recovery 8.5 will now have the capability to back up virtual machines running in both VMware and Microsoft Virtual Server environments.

With so many hosting options available, it can be rather confusing what to go with. This isn’t referring to the many hosting plans that are on the market. This is referring to whether you should use VMware hosting, dedicated hosting, or shared hosting. Microsoft Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 Enterprise

Within the next couple of months, Microsoft will be releasing their latest offering in the server operating system arena. Window Server 2008 is slated for release in Febuary, and although the technology is still in beta, will soon feature Hyper-V, a built in virtualization engine that will allow Windows Server 2008 to compete with the likes of VMware’s Virtual Infrastructure. Microsoft Announces Aquisition of Callista Technologies

Microsoft Corporation announced yesterday that it has aquired Callista Technologies, a software company that designs compression technology for virtual desktops that will allow the software giant to stream applications to users more effectively. This technology could be combined with the new Hyper-V system that will be rolled out in Windows Server 2008 and could help Microsoft close the gap on virtualization leader VMware. Read more

VMware Aquires Thinstall - What This Means for Virtual Desktops

VMware announced this week that it is in the process of aquiring Thinstall, a San Francisco based software company. Details can be found here. Thinstall brings an application virtualization platform to the table where each application gets packaged in it’s own virtual environment with virtual registry hives and a filesystem. When the application is executed, it runs in it’s own “sandbox”. This means that applications can be executed without having to be installed on the system. You simply execute the Thinstall packaged executable and the application runs within it’s own virtual environment on your desktop. And since it runs within it’s own sandbox, it has no impact whatsoever on other applications running on your system. Read more
